Contacted by indian telstra NBN upgrade team asked for Team viewer access on my PC and mobile

I was approached today by an Indian  Telstra supposed rep to notify me of my pending upgrade to fibre optic for my older ADSL copper line by NBN, he said there is no cost to me at all. He knew my address and said that upgrade was happening shortly and I needed to decide on an inground upgrade or roof connection upgrade.  He said to decide I should talk to the TECH to decide. The tech asked me to set up a team viewer and asked how far away was I from my modem,  2 metres I said and he asked me to check any changes in the lights which were flashing green. several times?

. He said we need to do more tests and also did I have a mobile, didn't matter if it was Telstra or Optus. I should move away from the room and setup team viewer on my mobile and also check speed. I was now away from my PC which had team viewer on. This didn't seem right so I said I am disconnecting and this seems like another scam.  So I disconnected my PC and modem from power and didn't set up my mobile with team viewer as a precaution.  Surely this isn't how Telstra would ask a client to help upgrade their system??  watch out,  this seems like a very organised scam, the Team Viewer for the clincher for me!

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Contacted by indian telstra NBN upgrade team asked for Team viewer access on my PC and mobile

It's a very old scam (it has been going on for years) and has been well publicised in the past when it was prevalent. The real giveaway is that Telstra will never ring you for something like this (or ever, for that matter, unless you have contacted them first). You would also never be asked to do tests as they would be completely pointless (why would they need to test your existing connection?).

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.

Re: Contacted by indian telstra NBN upgrade team asked for Team viewer access on my PC and mobile

Hi toplink.

We do what we can to block & stop scam callers, but as we're not a law enforcement agency & the majority of scam calls come from overseas using number spoofing, it can be hard to stop them entirely. If you continue to get them, please chat to our "Unwelcomed Calls" team on 1800805996.

You can find some more useful info here on how to handle these calls https://tel.st/tg9hh. You can report this to the Aust. Communications & Media Authority here: ACMA http://www.acma.gov.au/ or scamwatch https://tel.st/l78rc;

We have a printable PDF document here https://tel.st/vfb4c on how to tell if it is really Telstra calling you. We also have more info here on how what to do if you get a scam call https://tel.st/d7tvs.

Finally, you can also report this via the "Misuse of Telstra Service" form https://tel.st/mz24j

These steps are the best way to reduce these calls.

Regards - Tom
