What to consider when setting up your home office

Nowadays, more of us are working from home. Whether you are a small business operating out of your home, an employee with flexibility and a desire to avoid the morning commute, and everything in between, the need for a well-planned home office or study is essential.

This space must be pleasing to you aesthetically, but probably the most important decisions you will make and that will impact productivity are what digital technologies you choose.

Whether you choose a desktop or laptop, make sure you do lots of pre-purchase investigating online beforehand. Visiting brand communities, like our own CrowdSupport, can give you real customer testimonials from other consumers, so they are definitely worth a look when making your decision. Make sure you have enough RAM and Hard Drive space to meet your needs. Consider getting a Solid State Drive (SSD), which is more expensive, but is more durable – especially if you travel with your laptop.

For broadband customers (nbn™, Cable or ADSL), we suggest getting a Telstra Gateway Frontier®, which uses hybrid technology. This means if you experience an outage, it automatically switches to an inbuilt mobile SIM on the Telstra Mobile Network, until your service is restored.

As long as you have an ABN or ACN, you can register for a Telstra Small Business Bundles

New customers with the nbn™ available at their premises may wish to choose a DOT (Digital Office Technology)™ plan, which utilises your modem to deliver a High Definition IP fixed line phone service bundled with your broadband plan, and comes with a number of useful inclusions.

Telstra’s Small Business Bundles come with a Telstra Apps Marketplace credit of up to $15 a month for 24 months. You can use this monthly credit towards a single app subscription such as Microsoft® Office 365 Business, or other apps, ranging from security, to storage and backup, to communication and productivity tools.  Visit the Telstra Apps Marketplace to browse the 50+ apps you can choose from.

Decide between a wired or wireless home network, depending on your needs, including number of people and security needs.  Speed can be a big incentive for a wired network over a wireless one, but as Wi-Fi technology improves, many are opting to forgo messy Ethernet cables around the office. To protect your network, we would suggest using cloud-based web and email protection services.

With Telstra’s PC and Server Backup applications, you can reduce the risk of losing valuable data on computers and servers. Depending on your individual needs, you can choose from 10GB up to 1000GB of storage. You can also manage storage limits by using a cloud-based email archiving system, which you (or your employees) can access on the go.
